Apple iPhone 5

First iPhone was launched on June 29, 2007 by Steve Jobs, person who founded Apple Inc. iPhone was the first Smart Phone of its kind the world ever saw. It was a seamless convergence of 3 kinds of devices - an iPod, a phone and a super compact internet communicator with a finger operated touch screen. Evolving through various generations - iPhone > iPhone 3G > iPhone 3GS > iPhone 4 > iPhone 4S - we now see the sixth generation of this smartphone in an amazing avatar as iPhone 5, the latest, the lightest and the greatest iPhone from Apple. It was launched on September 21, 2012. The popularity of every single iPhone, through its many generations, can be well gauged by the fact that it consistently won 9 J.D. Power Awards, latest being as recent as 2013 for the "Highest Consumer Satisfaction in Smartphone Category" on the parameters of performance, physical design, features and ease of operation.

Apple iPhone 5 is not merely a hardware or a software upgrade over its predecessor - iPhone 4S, in fact it's a completely re-designed phone in every aspect. Same reflects in the words of Jony Ive, Senior Vice President, Design, Apple Inc. - "It took all of our learning, our best thinking to realise something so simple, so clear and yet so truly extra ordinary. Never before have we built a product with this extraordinary level of fit and finish".

Since the time iPhone was launched, it's five generations have had a 3.5 inch screen size. For the first time it has a bigger display of 4 inch in the iPhone 5. Incidentally, the screen has grown taller to house more content but the width has been maintained to what it was in iPhone 4S, so that the user can still use it comfortably with one hand. The Retina Display with 1136 x 640 pixels provides one of the finest visual display in 16:9 wide-screen aspect ratio. Colour saturation is also 44% higher than iPhone 4S. Contrary to the fact that the display has become bigger, the new iPhone 5 is thinner and lighter than the previous one. At 7.6 mm it is 18% thinner and at 112 grams of weight it is 20% lighter than iPhone 4S.

The new A6 chip developed in-house by Apple, delivers performance up to twice as fast as the previous generation iPhone. It's a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor with 1GB RAM. Though it's 22% smaller than A5 yet significantly enhances the speed, improves detailing of the content and boosts frame rates, all this seamlessly works with its latest operating system iOS 6. Each generation of iPhone launched, has been accompanied with a major upgrade in iOS and keeping the trend iOS 6 has been custom designed for iPhone 5. Internal accelerometers are quite responsive providing innovative features like 'shake to undo'. Motion sensor games are more fun as well. With iOS 6, Siri has also become better and responds to a much wider variety of commands. It now has the ability to make restaurant reservations, find movie reviews, sports updates and Facebook & Twitter can be updated through dictation. It can even open the apps sitting on the phone. In addition to the iMessage (a specialized iPhone-to-iPhone free messaging service), iPhone 5 also comes with a voice to text feature.

Outstanding fit and finish is a result of meticulous detailing by Apple. They used the finest material available e.g. the Camera Lens-cover is made up of Sapphire, which makes the cover thinner and yet durable than the earlier glass cover. Craft-fully designed aluminium body and other enclosures further contribute to the beautiful contours of the phone. Apple fans have spoken at lengths about how rich the experience is to touch and hold an iPhone in their hand, courtesy the superior quality material used to make iPhone 5.

Keeping to a slim design philosophy the earlier 30-pin connector has been replaced with an all-digital compact Lighting Connector which can be used either ways. Panoramic pictures are impressive and Face-time call (iPhone's alternative to Skype) is the next level experience. Users claim that their experience with new iPhone feels more fluidic, responsive and fast. The Wi-Fi on iPhone 5 can accelerate up to 150 Mbps and provides seamless connectivity with all kinds of cellular networks 2G, 3G, 4G and LTE. Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion polymer battery is 1140 mAh lasts reasonably long. It however, cannot be replaced by the user itself. There are three microphones, all strategically placed - one in the front, one on the side and one at the back for dual purpose - noise cancellation and video calls.

Even the earphones, called Earpods were designed from scratch for iPhone 5. The story behind their creation is quite interesting to know. The starting point was the fact that no two human ears are the same hence, the challenge was to make a unique design which would comfortably fit everyone and provide an unmatched comfort and incredible sound quality. Apple engineers scanned the three dimensional space in the ear of hundreds of people to arrive at a common space volume. And hence, they developed a uniquely shaped headphone which would comfortably fit this common space in every one's ear.
