The new Ford Ecosport is the 3rd generation of this compact SUV. It was first built in Brazil in 2003. Currently this mini-SUV is present in Brazil, Mexico and China in the Petrol engine variant. Argentina is the first market in the world, which has got a diesel engine variant as well. An intelligent cross over, Ecosport beautifully packs the comfort of a sedan and ruggedness of a SUV in city-suitable size. "The EcoSport is an urban SUV that blends the flexibility and spaciousness of an SUV with the agility, affordability and fuel efficiency of a compact car" as per Matt Bradley, president, Ford ASEAN.
Given its drop dead gorgeous looks - exterior as well as interior, people are eagerly waiting for its launch in India which is expected by June 2013. The biggest talking point for Ford Ecosport is its revolutionary 1.0 litre 3 cylinder Eco-boost Engine which generates a whooping 120 PS power and a peak torque of 170 Nm at just 1500 rpm. The credit goes to adaptation of two key technologies from a modern day diesel engine i.e. Direct Injection & Turbo charged complimented by cast iron material which warms up 50% faster compared to an aluminium engine. This small in size but enormous in output engine produces the same output of a 1.6 litre petrol engine. Not just the power but the mileage is impressive too. Ford claims that it will give 20 kmpl of mileage at an extremely low Co2 level of 140 g/km. Making it 20% more efficient compared to a present day 1.6 litre engine which places it on a high performance pedestal. The diesel variant is expected to get 1.5 litre Duratorq engine borrowed from the Ford Fiesta/Figo which generates 90 BHP power and 204 Nm of torque. An automatic Ecosport version with a petrol engine is also expected in near future.
Its high stance with 16 inch wheels offer 200mm of ground clearance which is even more than that of a Ford Endeavour. Ecosport is equipped with Sophisticated New Smartphone App Technologies, Electronic Stability Program, Push button start, Rear Parking Sensor, Climate Control, Emergency Assistance Services. The compact SUV comes with Ford SYNC driver connect system, a unique voice command system co-developed with MicroSoft. Furthermore Hill Launch Assist prevents the vehicle from rolling back when the brakes are released on an inclined surface. Such features in this category are expected to set a new benchmark in the under 10 Lac SUV category. Since the overall length is under 4 metre consumers will be spared of heavy excise duty allowing Ford to attractively price the car.
Variants and Prices (India): Ex-showroom price in India for 1.0 litre Eco-boost petrol is expected to be around Rs. 7 Lac and diesel variant around Rs. 9 Lac.
